By Farr: Why Collectors Consider It One of Australia's Greatest Wineries

June 28, 2026Stephanie Kerr

Some wineries make excellent wine.

Some become cult producers.

A select few redefine what an Australian region can achieve.

By Farr belongs firmly in that final category.

For more than three decades, the Farr family has produced some of Australia's most sought-after Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Moorabool Valley in Geelong, earning a reputation that places them alongside the country's finest producers. Some By Farr wines have also earned inclusion in the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine, placing them among the country's most collectible bottles.

Collectors cellar them.

Critics chase allocations.

Restaurants compete for listings.

And many wine lovers consider By Farr the benchmark for cool climate Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

So what makes these wines so special?

In this blog you'll learn

  • What By Farr is
  • Who Gary and Nick Farr are
  • Why By Farr is often compared with Burgundy
  • What makes the Moorabool Valley unique
  • Which By Farr wines collectors seek out
  • How long By Farr wines can age
  • Why allocations often sell out quickly

A winery built on obsession rather than scale

By Farr was established in 1994 by Gary and Robyn Farr in Victoria's Moorabool Valley, near Geelong.

At the time, Geelong was far from the globally recognised wine region it is today.

Much of that reputation can be attributed to producers like the Farr family.

Before founding By Farr, Gary Farr had already built a formidable reputation working with Bannockburn Vineyard, helping establish Geelong as one of Australia's premier cool climate regions for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

But perhaps more importantly, Gary spent years working vintages in Burgundy, particularly at Domaine Dujac.

The influence of Burgundy can still be seen throughout the wines today.

Not in imitation.

But in philosophy.

Respect for site.

Respect for vineyard expression.

And a belief that great wines are grown rather than manufactured.

The next generation didn't continue the legacy. They expanded it.

Many family wineries struggle with succession.

By Farr became stronger.

Today the winery is led by second-generation winemaker Nick Farr, who worked extensively in Burgundy, Oregon and California before returning to Geelong. His experience included vintages at some of the world's great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay estates before taking over responsibility for the family vineyards and winery.

While Gary helped define Australian cool climate Pinot Noir, Nick has helped elevate it even further.

The result is a rare situation where two generations of winemakers have each helped shape the identity of the same producer.

Why collectors compare By Farr to Burgundy

Mention By Farr among collectors and Burgundy is rarely far behind.

Again, this is not because the wines taste identical.

Australia is not Burgundy.

Geelong is not the Côte d'Or.

But the similarities in philosophy are unmistakable:

  • Single vineyard expressions
  • Site transparency
  • Whole bunch fermentation
  • Natural fermentations
  • Minimal intervention winemaking
  • Structure designed for ageing rather than immediate gratification

The wines often show a combination of power and restraint that collectors associate with great Burgundy.

They possess fruit concentration without heaviness.

Structure without aggression.

And complexity that continues to evolve in bottle for decades.

The secret lies beneath the vines

The Moorabool Valley is one of Australia's most distinctive viticultural sites.

Ancient river deposits, volcanic soils and limestone create remarkable complexity beneath the vineyard.

The climate is equally important.

Cooling winds from the Southern Ocean moderate temperatures throughout the growing season, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity. Low rainfall and challenging conditions keep yields small and concentrated.

This combination produces wines with remarkable tension, freshness and longevity.

The sort of wines collectors love to revisit years later.

Which By Farr wines attract the most attention?

By Farr Chardonnay

Arguably one of Australia's greatest Chardonnays.

Powerful yet restrained, it combines citrus, stone fruit, flint and mineral tension with extraordinary ageing potential.

Many collectors comfortably cellar it for 10-15 years or longer.

Sangreal Pinot Noir

Often considered the flagship Pinot Noir of the estate.

Produced from the original vineyard planted in 1994, Sangreal is known for its perfume, structure and longevity.

For many collectors, this is the wine that defines By Farr.

Sangreal is also recognised in the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine, placing it among Australia's most collectible and historically significant wines.

Farrside Pinot Noir

Typically darker, more structured and more powerful than Sangreal.

A favourite among collectors who enjoy a firmer style of Pinot Noir.

Tout Près Pinot Noir

The smallest production and perhaps the most Burgundian of the range.

The vineyard sits closest to the winery, hence the name "Tout Près" - French for "very close".

These wines are often among the most tightly allocated releases.

Tout Près is also included in the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine, highlighting its reputation among collectors and its consistent performance over multiple vintages.

GC Chardonnay

Named in honour of Gary Charles Farr, this wine comes from high-density plantings specifically designed to push quality even further.

Many collectors view it as one of Australia's finest Chardonnays.

Can By Farr wines age?

Absolutely.

In fact, opening them too early is arguably the biggest mistake collectors make.

Young By Farr wines can appear tightly wound and structured.

Time allows the wines to develop greater complexity, savoury characteristics and texture.

As a broad guide:

Wine Drinking Window
By Farr Chardonnay 10-15+ years
Sangreal Pinot Noir 10-20 years
Farrside Pinot Noir 10-20 years
Tout Près Pinot Noir 15-25+ years
GC Chardonnay 15-20+ years

Exceptional vintages may comfortably exceed these estimates.

Why are By Farr wines so difficult to find?

The answer is simple.

Demand exceeds supply.

The Farr family remains committed to quality over expansion.

Production volumes remain relatively small, vineyard work remains intensive and allocations are fiercely contested each vintage. The winery produces only around 5,500 dozen annually across all labels and vineyards.

Many collectors purchase every year regardless of vintage conditions.

Others join allocation lists and wait patiently for opportunities to secure bottles.

The verdict

Australia has many exceptional wineries.

Very few become benchmarks.

Add one more to the collection?🍷

By Farr has reached that level.

Not because of marketing.

Not because of scarcity alone.

But because year after year the wines continue to deliver precision, individuality and longevity.

For collectors building an Australian cellar, By Farr is not simply another producer worth exploring.

It is one of the reference points against which many others are judged.

And that is perhaps the strongest endorsement any winery can receive.
