Iconic Aussie Shiraz, with Barossa soul đŸ·đŸ”„

Rockford Basket Press is one of Australia’s most collected reds. A First Classified (First Growth) in Langton’s Classification, it’s chased vintage after vintage—right up there with Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace.

The 2017 is classic Basket Press: sourced from dry-grown Barossa vineyards aged 60 to 130 years and made using traditional basket press techniques. It’s all about purity and structure—spicy, earthy, layered, and powerful.

With limited production and serious aging potential, this is one of the country’s most collectible Shiraz releases—and a must-have for any serious cellar.

What the experts say about this wine

Tasting this graceful Barossa Valley shiraz is like stepping into a time machine back to the region in the 1950s or early 1960s. I love the wide array of ripe yet delicate red fruit aromas and the layered fine tannins that give this enormous textural complexity. Tons of subtle spicy notes at the extremely long velvety finish. Develops so well in the glass I’d expect this to age very well. Drink or hold.

Deep, soft ruby colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is fragrant, red-fruited, gently minty and open-knit, with a lick of char-oak, the palate following on from there with savouryflavours and drying but supple tannins surrounding a delicious core of sweet fruit. The palate is quite intense, deep and lush with a trace of mint. It's weighty, satisfying and flavoursome in its relatively unpolished but hearty way. Drink 2021-2031.

Deep, shimmering ruby. Dried cherry, blackberry, licorice and woodsmoke on the spice-inflected nose. Concentrated black and blue fruit, floral pastille and mocha flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows firm, spicy cut on the persistent finish, which features steadily emerging tannins and a hint of bitter cherry pit.
