Bass Phillip Estate Chardonnay 2023

Icon pedigree, estate price 🍋🌿

Bass Phillip is one of Australia’s most revered Chardonnay producers, with its Premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay recognised as Classified (Second Growth) in the Langton’s Classification. But for those wanting to experience the house style without the 'premium' price tag, the Estate Chardonnay is your ticket in.

The 2023 vintage shows exactly why this Gippsland-based icon has a cult following: citrus, white peach, struck match, and subtle oak spice, all wrapped in fine acidity and a creamy, elegant texture. It’s precise, expressive, and beautifully balanced—crafted with the same low-intervention, high-attention approach as its top-tier siblings.

For Chardonnay lovers, this is a seriously good bottle from one of Australia’s greatest Chardonnay names—without having to break the bank... too much.

What the experts say about this wine

Full, brassy tinted yellow colour. There are oxidative aromas of malt, toast, butter and marzipan. Full bodied and rich, ample and generous, finishing with well-balanced tannin grip. It's big and generous but arguably lacks a little in freshness and brightness. It presents as oxidatively made style, a bit outside the Australian mainstream, more like a Burgundy. The palate has wonderful richness and depth of flavour. Truly impressive.

Always a gold hue to the Premium, albeit bright and light. Complex and detailed, savoury in outlook with spicy oak, clotted cream and nutty lees, a touch of lemon juice and pith and neat phenolics throughout with a gentle tug on the finish. There’s a slight oxidative note within, adding another layer of detail. Impressive. Distinctly Bass Phillip.
